Liam is No. 1 for the first time, as America’s top 2017 baby names are revealed

(Murray Close of Lionsgate, via Associated Press) Actor Liam Hemsworth portrays Gale Hawthorne in a scene from "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1." In 2017, for the first time, Liam was the top name for boys born in America, according to the Social Security Administration.

Liam has unseated Noah as the most popular name for baby boys born in 2017, topping the list for the first time, according to Social Security data released Friday.

Emma continued its reign as most popular girl’s name for the fourth year in a row.

Meanwhile, Michael — which was the No. 1 boy’s name from 1961 to 1998 — dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since World War II. Emily dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since 1990.

Liam, a derivative of William, rose to the top 10 in 2012 and has been rising since then, according to a news statement from the Social Security Administration.

Joining the top 10 this year are Amelia and Evelyn, which last appeared in the top 10 in 1915, as well as Logan and Oliver.

The fastest risers were Ensley, which rose 1,461 spots last year to No. 965 on the girls’ list, and Wells, which rose 504 spots to No. 915 on the boys’ list.

Social Security expects to release the top names by state next week, a spokeswoman said. In 2016, Liam was the third most popular name for Utah boys, with Oliver and William in the top two spots. The top three names for girls born in Utah in 2016 were Olivia, Emma and Charlotte.
