A 25-year-old man was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly driving drunk when he crashed into a Davis County home, struck a crib and propelled a sleeping infant girl across the room.
The child was taken to a hospital for treatment of a possible head injury, but returned home later that day, according to Davis County Sheriff’s Detective Ty Berger.
The man was arrested on suspicion of class A misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol with injury and second-degree felony criminal mischief. Formal charges had not been filed as of Wednesday.
Impact from the car — which made a “significant intrusion into the home’s interior” — caused damage estimated at more than $5,000, according to a probable cause statement filed in 2nd District Court.
Events leading to the 2:14 a.m. crash began when a North Salt Lake police officer clocked the suspect’s car traveling north on Redwood Road at over 100 mph.
The officer was unable to catch the speeding car, and officers who planned to intercept it farther up the road arrived too late to do so.
After crashing into the home, near 1800 West and 400 South, the driver admitted drinking alcohol and failed field sobriety tests.
A portable breath test showed a 0.198 blood-alcohol level, which is nearly 2.5 times Utah’s current legal limit to drive, but blood was drawn so more accurate testing could be done, Berger said.
Police found a loaded firearm in the car, as well as several unopened bottles of beer, the probable cause statement said.
