Police identify body found in West Valley City drainage pipe as woman missing since February

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) West Valley City Police officers work the scene where a body was recovered from a storm culvert on the grounds of the the vacant Kmart building at 4100 South and 1770 West in West Valley City, Friday, April 6, 2018.

A missing-persons case was closed Wednesday after investigators confirmed that a body found last week in a West Valley City drainage pipe was the woman they’d sought.

The medical examiner’s office confirmed that the woman was Cami Shepherd, 43, according to a news release from West Valley City police.

Shepherd’s family reported her missing Feb. 2 , according to the release , saying that while it was common for Shepherd to disappear, this time she’d been gone longer than usual.

On Friday, a construction crew called police after finding Shepherd’s body floating in about 4 feet of water in a drainage pipe behind an old Kmart building at 1770 W. 4100 South.

An autopsy the next morning found no obvious signs of trauma on Shepherd’s body. Police haven’t determined Shepherd’s cause of death, and they are awaiting her toxicology report.
