Armed man who barricaded himself inside Herriman home taken into custody

A standoff near 13300 South and 7300 West in Herriman ended safely just before 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police had asked nearby neighbors to “shelter in place” — in a basement, if possible — as a SWAT team confronted the 35-year-old man, who was armed with a rifle.

Just before 12:30 p.m., the man was breaking out windows with a rifle at the home, where a shed was on fire, Unified police tweeted. The man’s parents live at the home, and according to court records, he lived there himself as recently as 2014.

The tweet did not specify whether the man was shooting at the windows or swinging the rifle at the windows to break them.

Police said the man had possibly barricaded himself and asked people in surrounding areas to seek shelter where they were, preferably in a basement.

The man has a long string of misdemeanor convictions — including assault, criminal mischief, driving under the influence, driving on suspended license, theft and shoplifting — dating back to 2001, according to Utah court records.

He is currently on probation for a third-degree felony DUI that occurred in Utah County in 2014, court records show.

Butterfield Canyon Elementary was placed on a lockout during the episode, according to Jordan School District officials.
