City issues vacate orders for Riverdale homes near landslide

(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Unstable slope beneath house near 4860 S. 600 W. in Riverdale, Wednesday Nov. 29, 2017. Four houses in a row whose backyard's facing west, with railroad tracks and the Weber River Parkway below have been evacuated due to a landslide.

Riverdale • Riverdale city officials have sent a notice-to-vacate order to residents and mortgage lenders of three homes threatened by a landslide.

The Standard-Examiner reports Riverdale City sent certified letters to the mortgage lenders and residents on March 30 informing them of a “Notice of Order to Vacate and Abandon dangerous building and property.”

The letters signal that the homes cannot be saved.

The area became unstable on Nov. 19 when a large section of the hillside behind the homes gave way.

The homes were evacuated later that month.

Riverdale City Administrator Rodger Worthen says the order informs the banks that “they no longer have an asset to secure the mortgage.”

He says the homes are considered “dangerous” under the city’s building codes and will likely never be occupied again.
