Two people have died from severe injuries suffered in a head-on crash that involved a 91-year-old man driving the wrong way on Legacy Parkway.

Donald Egginton, of Bountiful, was driving south on the northbound lanes of the highway at about 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Most of the oncoming traffic swerved out of the way, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. But the man’s car collided head-on with a car carrying two people near Glover Lane.

UHP on Thursday announced that Egginton and the passenger in the other car, 36-year-old Epemesa Aetonu, of Tafuna, American Samoa, had died.

The other driver is expected to survive.

The northbound lanes of Legacy Parkway were closed for 2½ hours after the crash. About 3:45 p.m., one lane was opened.

Investigators haven’t determined why Egginton was driving the wrong way.
