Utah man dies in avalanche near Jackson Hole resort

An Orem man died Saturday in an avalanche just south of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming.

Alexander Marra, 30, was found partially buried with obvious signs of trauma in an avalanche in Rock Springs Canyon, Anna Cole, spokesperson for the resort, said. Marra and his friend were in the Ralph’s Slide area of the canyon.

Marra and a friend accessed the terrain via a backcountry gate at the top of the resort’s boundary. The avalanche was skier-caused, Cole said, and reported by Marra’s friend at 11:18 a.m. Ski patrol arrived at 11:27 a.m. and pronounced Marra dead.

Cole said the avalanche was 2 feet deep at the crown. It’s the first time this season someone has died from an avalanche in the resort or on terrain accessed from the resort, Cole said.
