An Australia-based mission president with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints broke his neck in a “serious” bicycle crash Wednesday morning and is in intensive care.

Daniel J. Bingham, 58, had been president of the Australia Sydney South Mission since July, church spokesman Daniel Woodruff said in a news release. He served in Australia alongside his wife, Donna.

Bingham had surgery after the crash and is in the hospital, Woodruff said.

The Binghams, who are from Helena, Mont., have four children.

“The family is grateful for prayers on their behalf at this difficult time,” Woodruff said.

Mission presidents oversee the local missionaries known for going door-to-door proselytizing.
