A Herriman High School senior died Wednesday when he crashed his car into the back of a school bus near 12600 South on Bangerter Highway in Riverton.

The victim was identified by Unified police as 17-year-old Bryson Hathaway.

The crash happened about 1:45 p.m., UPD Detective Ken Hansen.

A ninth-grade girl and a driver were on the bus; they suffered minor injuries.

Damage to the small car that rear-ended the Jordan School District bus was significant. Police confirmed that there was only one person in the car.

Hansen said the southbound bus was stopped at a light at 12600 South when it was hit from behind by the car, which had been moving fast.

Two of the three outside lanes of southbound Bangerter were closed for several hours.

Hathaway was a cornerback for his high school’s varsity football team and also played baseball, according to online rosters.

A post on the Herriman High football Facebook page Tuesday evening said the team was devastated and heartbroken by Hathaway’s death.

It ended by saying, “Please hug your kids extra long and remind them to be safe.”
