Salt Lake Tribune photos of the month for January 2018

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Ondi Williamson services and repairs vehicles for a living now at his full service garage attached to his home in Nephi. Williamson suffers from PTSD and depression stemming from the 2002 vehicle collision that killed his wife Thanh Williamson, injured himself and his daughter Alexa. The accident set a precedent-setting decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on seatbelt safety requirements.

A mild January has slowed down snowfall, making way for a less wintry mix of images from Tribune photographers. They captured the madness of the Sundance Film Festival, where celebrities from film, TV and beyond took to Park City.

Photographers spent time on the sidelines of basketball games throughout the Salt Lake Valley and on the slopes, as winter athletes prepared for the upcoming Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

They slipped into intimate settings, documenting the death of the LDS Church’s prophet and a widower whose wife died in a car accident, handling both with the same sensitive and careful eye.
