Stopping the I-15 tanker conflagration — through the eyes of a Utah firefighter

(Fitzgerald Petersen | United Fire) ÒI wish I could explain to you how hot this was,Ó said Unified Fire Authority Capt. Fitzgerald Petersen, who documented the firefight. ÒPainful hot. Great people.Ó A fuel tanker caught fire Thursday night on Interstate 15, creating explosions that shot flames into the sky. The blaze shut down a stretch of the stateÕs busiest freeway for hours.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Fitzgerald Petersen took these dramatic photos Thursday night as firefighters put out a blaze from an exploded fuel tanker.

The fire shut down north- and southbound Interstate 15 for hours, but no one was injured. Road workers patched up southbound lanes Friday in an effort the Utah Department of Transportation called “nothing short of amazing.”
