Search-and-rescue crews looking for plane that disappeared en route to Salt Lake City

Crews have been searching since Thursday near Elko, Nev., for a small airplane that disappeared en route to Salt Lake City from California but have not found any sign of the aircraft.

The two-engine Piper aircraft was being flown by a 26-year-old Mississippi man, who was the only occupant, according to Sgt. Nick Czegledi of the Elko County Sheriff’s Office. He said the office was told on Thursday evening of the possibility of a downed plane in the area.

A search by helicopter was conducted Thursday night in the Ruby Mountains, where the plane’s last GPS coordinates were reported, and local residents in the sparsely populated area also helped look, Czegledi said. He said additional searches — which included help from the Civil Air Patrol and private partners — were conducted on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but there has been no sign of the missing plane.

The search is slated to continue on Monday, Czegledi said.
