Crews were dispatched to clean up a hazardous materials spill on State Route 201 near Redwood Road on Tuesday morning.
A lock broke on the back of a semi truck and two boxes containing formic acid fell out, according to West Valley Fire Department spokesman Jeff Fox.
One of the boxes — which contained ten small bottles of formic acid — broke open, Fox said. Four of the 400-milliliter bottles cracked open, spilling high-grade formic acid onto the middle of the road, Fox said.
The West Valley Fire Department neutralized the acid with soda ash, and the health department picked up the acid, Fox said.
No one was injured.
The driver had pulled over at the 900 West off-ramp after the spill, Fox said.
The Utah Department of Transportation closed all eastbound lanes of traffic at Redwood Road on SR-201 for 45 minutes for the cleanup. SR-201 was opened back up at 12:25 p.m.
