Students were evacuated Monday morning from Mound Fort Middle School in Ogden when a short-lived fire broke out in a bathroom, officials say. Investigators have determined the fire to be human-caused.
Nineteen firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire, 1396 Liberty Avenue, at 11:06 a.m., according to an Ogden Fire Department news release. The south wing of the school was filled with smoke, and firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire.
School was canceled for the day as firefighters worked to clear smoke from the building. All fire damage was contained to the bathroom. Hallways received smoke damage. In all, the fire caused $5,000 in damage, the release said.
At the start of the fire, students were evacuated to nearby Gramercy Elementary School, where school officials released students to parents and guardians with photo IDs, according to a news release from Ogden School District. Students who use buses would arrive home at the usual time, the release said.
The elementary school’s routine was not affected by the evacuation, the release said. School at the middle school is scheduled to resume as normal Tuesday.
No one was injured in the fire, officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office.
