Box Elder County deputies identify man who died in accidental shooting

A 27-year-old man died Saturday when his father accidentally shot him in Box Elder County.

The Box Elder County Sheriff's Office identified the deceased as James Shurtz. He and his father, Glenn Shurtz, were shooting at targets with a high-powered rifle about 20 miles west of Snowville, according to the sheriff's office.

"The temporary range was east to west; targets west of the shooter. Father and son were alternating positions; one would shoot and the other would be downrange as a spotter," the sheriff's office said in a news release. When Glenn Shurtz was shooting, James Shurtz was "in position downrange acting as spotter."

James Shurtz was hit in the chest by a single round from the .30 caliber rifle. He died at the scene.

Deputies are still investigating.
