Troopers identify the two dead, three hurt in Spanish Fork Canyon crash

Two people died in a Spanish Fork Canyon crash that also badly injured three people.

On Saturday afternoon, a northbound Dodge Intrepid was stopped at a stop sign on U.S. Highway 89, at the Thistle Junction intersection with U.S. Highway 6. As the car tried to turn left, an eastbound Dodge pickup pulling a horse trailer tried to avoid the Intrepid — but the truck struck the side of the car, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Intrepid, 25-year-old Amelia Allan of Provo, was critically injured.

Two of the four family members in the pickup — Heather Jacobson, 38, and Broc Jacobson, 7 — were killed. The driver of the pickup — Landon Jacobson, 38 — survived, but has critical injuries. The fourth relative, 16-year-old Bowdie Jacobson, suffered serious injuries, according to UHP.

The Jacobsons are from the Emery County town of Cleveland.

The horses in the trailer also were also hurt, but were able to walk out and a veterinarian is caring for them. A UHP news release does not specify how many horses were in the trailer.

"It is unknown why the driver of the [Intrepid] pulled out into the path of the pickup," the news release said.

Everyone was wearing seat belts, UHP added.
