Tuesday on TV: ‘People v. O.J.’ is compelling; ‘Of Kings and Prophets’ is not

Ray Mickshaw | FX Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark, Christian Clemenson as Bill Hodgman in ÒThe People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.Ó

Yes, I've had a couple of serious reservations about "The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" (11 p.m., FX). The inclusion of Kim and Khloe Kardashian (as children) is distracting and utterly irrelevent, and John Travolta's makeup and performance as attorney Robert Shapiro is ridiculous.

But given how good the series is overall, that's quibbling. And this week's episode is particularly good.

Prosecutor Marcia Clark (Sarah Poulson) faces public scrutiny and rampant sexism, both inside and outside the court. It's utterly shameful — one of many utterly shameful aspects of the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

And it's compelling television.

• Also tonight, it's the premiere of "Of Kings and Prophets" (9 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4) — a drama based on the Old Testament narrative in 1 and 2 Samuel and tells the stories of Saul and David. It's a violent, sexy soap opera of sorts.

There's been a lot of talk about how violent it is, and ABC is posting strong warnings for viewers. But then so is the Old Testament. Don't forget that God, through the prophet Samuel, ordered King Saul to wipe out an entire people — including women and children.

It does, however, seem that viewers who might be interested in a biblical show are going to be turned off by the violence in this one. And the viewers who like violent dramas might not be interested in a show based on the Bible.

The bigger problem is probably that "Of Kings and Prophets" isn't particularly entertaining or engaging. I'd be shocked if this show succeeds.
