Eleftherios "Liberto" Dariotis, a plant biologist and botanist for the city of Papagou, a suburb of Athens, will speak about "Alpine Flora of Greece" on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Red Butte Garden.
The number of plant species in Greece is among the largest in Europe, and few botanists know as much about the diversity as Dariotis, who is on a 10-city tour of the U.S. He has a master's in plant biology from the University of California at Davis and a master's in horticulture from the University of Reading, England.
Northern Utah and parts of Greece share similar climates, with hot summers and a mountain landscape, which means many plants do well in both regions, according to members of the Wasatch Rock Garden Society, which is hosting the lecture. Reception and light refreshments will follow the discussion.
