It seemed like business as usual at Sunroom Coffee on Monday, days after the Salt Lake City cafe was vandalized on Christmas.
“Our hearts are so full,” the Marmalade coffee shop posted in an Instagram story Sunday. “Hope you are enjoying the bagels.”
The shop at 470 W. 200 North had closed Friday to clean up after a vandal on Christmas apparently shattered one of its glass front doors, smashed the screen of a wall-mounted TV inside, tore down a large aluminum Christmas tree, toppled furniture and tossed straws, cups and other items on the ground.
A video documenting the damage was posted to social media, where the shop saw an outpouring of support.
After clearing the immediate mess, the shop was able to reopen Saturday, staff announced on Instagram. On Monday morning, it was buzzing with customers.
Sunroom Coffee’s owners declined to comment Monday, citing the ongoing criminal investigation.
The shop sits on the first floor of the Salt Lake Crossing apartment building, which was also vandalized over the holiday.
There, a vandal broke building windows, poured fuel on several floors and smashed car windows in the area, according to a Salt Lake City police document.
Officers arrested a man in connection, accusing him of property damage and attempted arson. The probable cause statement explaining his arrest, however, didn’t specifically mention Sunroom Coffee.
That document states the arrested man told police he intended to cause a “scene” to get officers’ attention to help him find his dog. The 29-year-old remained in Salt Lake County jail Monday without the option for bond, jail records indicated. The Salt Lake Tribune generally doesn’t name defendants unless they have been formally charged with a crime.
Salt Lake City police didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the case and whether the damage at Sunroom Coffee is considered related.
