Here’s when Daiso, the Japanese dollar store chain, will open its first Utah location

The first store will be in The Shops at Fort Union in Midvale. Two other Utah locations are set to open later this summer.

Utah’s first location for Daiso, a popular Japanese-based dollar store chain, will open next weekend, the company has announced.

The grand opening of the Daiso location at The Shops at Fort Union, 1110 E. Fort Union Blvd. in Midvale is set for Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, according to a recent Eventbrite posting.

Daiso (pronounced “DYE-soh”) is known for low-cost “Japanese inspired” goods — everything from household goods to beauty products, stationery to snacks.

Daiso US, the American arm of the international chain, announced last December that it would open the Midvale location, plus two others in Utah.

The other Utah locations are at Park Plaza in Clinton, in Davis County, and Riverside Plaza, on State Street in Provo. Both are slated to open sometime this summer, according to the company’s website. The company has posted job listings for both stores in recent weeks.

The weekend opening in Midvale will feature giveaways both days. The first 200 customers to make a $20 purchase on Saturday will receive a free tote bag. Customers who spend $20 on Sunday will receive a special gift. There also will be coupon offers throughout the weekend, while supplies last.

Doors open at 9 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the store announcement.

The company was founded in Hiroshima, Japan, and opened its first U.S. store in the Seattle area in 2005. It now boasts more than 150 locations across the United States.

Daiso’s arrival in Utah comes nearly a year after another Asian-based chain, the Korean grocery giant H Mart, opened its first Utah location in West Jordan.
