Cirque du Soleil will come to the Maverik Center this summer— big tent and all

The acclaimed Cirque du Soleil troupe is bringing its next show, “Bazzar,” to the Maverik Center in West Valley City — but not into the arena.

For the first time, Cirque du Soleil will bring its big-top tent to Utah — specifically, the Maverik Center’s parking lot, visible to commuters driving by on Interstate 215 — for a run of shows from May 24 to July 5.

The show pays tribute to the famous troupe’s 36-year legacy, based on the traditions of the circus, but remade for a modern audience — notably, without animal acts. The performers include acrobats, aerialists, clowns, dancers, bike-riding trick artists, fire manipulators, pole balancers, teeter-board experts, trapeze artists and more.

According to Cirque du Soleil’s press notes, in “Bazzar,” the performers “band together to invent a whimsical one-of-a-kind universe. In a place where the unexpected is expected, the colourful group imagines, builds and invents vibrant scenes in an artistic and acrobatic game.”

Tickets for “Bazzar,” starting at $49, go on sale Friday at the cirquedusoleil.com/bazzar. Presale begins Tuesday for members of Cirque Club, at cirqueclub.com.
