Fire at Utah meatpacking plant forces neighbors from homes

A fire at a northern Utah meatpacking plant forced the temporary evacuation of homes Friday morning.

The fire at West Liberty Foods at at 705 N. 2000 West in Tremonton is believed to have started in a boiler room about 5:30 a.m., according to officials. Firefighters from Garland, Tremonton, Fielding and Brigham City were called in to battle the blaze, which was brought under control by about 7:30 a.m.

Two people were treated for minor injuries, according to fire officials. Neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution, and residents were allowed to return to their houses by about 8 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
