Unfortunately for the Cougars, they couldn't take advantage of it after suffering falls on the vault and bars. BYU probably could have locked up the final spot in the regional championships with a good score, which the judges seemed eager to give.
"The scores were there to get, it's not like the judges were all that hard," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said.
When two teams with such different skills are on the floor together, judges sometimes have a harder time keeping the scores down because it's harder to compare the two.
"If it's us and Georgia, they're going to have to hold the scores down so they can reward the truly good routines," Utah coach Greg Marsden said. "In this environment, with a large crowd and senior night, it's hard."
One title won
Utah captured one title with its final regular season meet, the national attendance high mark. Utah averaged 12,747 fans this year while Alabama was second with 12,654. Utah gymnastics is the highest attended sporting event at the university other than football. The Utah men's basketball team averaged 10,481.
