Utah sports in brief: MLS veteran Dunseth to join Real Salt Lake
Real Salt Lake coach John Ellinger has lured another Major League Soccer veteran to his team. Seven-year MLS veteran and former U.S. Olympic Team captain Brian Dunseth will join the team, Real Salt Lake announced on Wednesday. Clint Mathis and Nikolas Besagno have said they also signed partly because of Ellinger. "To be back with John and [assistant coach] Peter [Mellor], and to be back with the players they've already acquired, I feel very fortunate to be a part of their plans," Dunseth said. Dunseth played under Ellinger on the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team. He began his MLS career in 1997 with the New England Revolution, then was traded to the Miami Fusion in 2001. In 2002, he played for the Columbus Crew, then was traded in 2003 to the Dallas Burn. Last year, he played with Bordens BK in the Swedish Supperettan, although Dallas retained his rights in the MLS. Real traded away its fourth-round draft pick in 2007 for Dunseth. "I really laugh when people say this is an expansion team," Dunseth said. "It might be the first year, but these are players with a lot of experience in the league." Dunseth likely will play as a center-defender, and general manager Steve Pastorino said he probably will be a starter. "He's a guy that we can just pencil in on our defense," Pastorino said. "We have to scour the country and the soccer community to find players of his quality, so there there was no hesitation in going after him." Less of a certainty is how Bosnian Senad Halilovic will fit in with the team. Although the 23-year-old's signing has not officially been announced by Real, Halilovic should be in Florida for the beginning of training camp on Feb. 1. "He is the kind of kid from Eastern Europe who hopefully can come to the U.S. and blossom," Pastorino said. Halilovic comes highly recommended, but RSL only has seen tapes of his play. "We decided we should take a chance on him," Pastorino said. - Peter Richins
USU all-century: Tony Brown and Cornell Green are the first two Aggies named to Utah State's all-century basketball team that is being announced at home games for the rest of the season. In all, 15 players will be named to the team, with one or two players being recognized at each home game.
St. George update: Sunbrook Golf Club will have all three nine-hole courses open for play today, with minor adjustments due to recent flooding. Two holes on the Woodbridge nine will shortened, but the other 25 holes are intact. Southgate GC's back nine was unaffected by the flood and will remain open; however, the front nine will be closed indefinitely. St. George City's other courses, Dixie Red Hills and St. George GC, were not flooded.
