After helping mothers deliver more than 36,000 babies at the Women's Pavilion since 2001, staffers at St. Mark's Hospital decided it was time for a baby shower.
A big one. Since the beginning of April, the Salt Lake City hospital has received donations of about 2,000 diapers, 100 onesies, 100 pairs of infant socks, 100 infant clothing ensembles and 50 boxes of wipes, all brand new.
On Friday, representatives from Salt Lake City charitable groups The Road Home, the YWCA and Family Promise came to the shower to collect the gifts, which they will distribute to women who need them.
The organizations and the hospital would welcome more donations of infant items, said Sandy Waterfall, St. Mark's director of women services. Here's what they need most: diapers, blankets, bottles, and infant clothing.
St. Mark's hasn't ever coordinated a baby-shower drive before, said spokeswoman Jennifer Bridges, but probably will do it again.
"That need is always there," she said, and the staffers are always looking for ways to contribute to the community.
