Kyle Fulks once ran a 10.21 100 meters, but that was back in high school.

"I think I'm a lot faster now."

Fulks, a 2013 Baylor signee who played last year at JUCO powerhouse Blinn Community College after some grade issues, committed to Utah on Wednesday.

The 5'9, 180-pound burner can play both cornerback and wide receiver, but he believes Utah sees him predominantly as a cornerback at the moment.

"It really doesn't matter, but if I had to pick, I'd say receiver," he told The Tribune by phone Wednesday night.

Last season at Blinn — where Utah also found quarterback Terrence Cain and wideout Dexter Ransom — Fulks played on both sides of the ball and also returned seven kickoffs. On offense, he caught 12 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown and rushed nine times for 56 yards and two touchdowns. On defense he made just five stops, but was credited with half a sack, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.

Coming out of Katy High, he was rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals and Scout. Baylor coach Art Briles was quoted in the Bears' signing day release as saying, "What can you say? The fastest guy in America."

Fulks is currently redshirting after spraining his PCL and will have three years to play three. He says not to fret the injury: He could still play this season if he wanted, but it makes sense to retain the eligibility.

He was recruited by safeties coach Morgan Scalley, whom he admires for his down-to-earth approach.

"It's his birthday today," Fulks said, adding in jest, "I gave him a good birthday gift."

He chose Utah over Texas Tech, where he would have had the opportunity to run track as well. But Fulks said he's committed to football, and is "set on coming to Utah."

Asked for a message for Utah fans, Fulks laughed and said it's not really his thing to hype himself.

"I'm pretty chill about that kind of stuff."
