Thousands expected to attend viewing, funeral for Mormon President Thomas S. Monson next week

(Scott Sommedorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) President Thomas S. Monson ponders at the funeral for his friend President Gordon B. Hinckley at the Conference Center on Feb. 2, 2008.

The funeral for LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson will be held at the faith’s giant Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City on Friday, Jan. 12, at noon.

The service will be open to those ages 8 and older.

On Thursday, Jan. 11, there will be a public viewing for all ages from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the center.

Viewings for previous late Mormon prophets drew tens of thousands of mourners.

Monson, the 16th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Tuesday night of age-related causes. He was 90.

Funeral attendees “must be in their seats no later than 11:30 a.m.,” the church announced Wednesday. Seating in the 21,000-capacity center is “open and on a first-come, first-served basis. Overflow seating with large-screen viewing of the proceedings will be offered in the adjacent Tabernacle, Assembly Hall and Conference Center Theater.”

The service also will be broadcast live via MormonNewsroom.org, LDS.org, KSL-TV, BYUtv and other outlets.

After the funeral, Monson will be buried in the historic Salt Lake City Cemetery in a private service.
