Letter: Our democracy is decaying, and that’s hard to endure

I feel bereft for myself and my country today. We have been utterly betrayed by all three branches of the federal government. Our nation has been enveloped by a cold, dark cloud of perversion, deception and corruption. The last 50 years (my lifetime) of enlightenment, if not more, have been destroyed in less than a year.

As a college graduate with a degree in political science and history, I could never have believed we would reach this nadir had I not beheld it with my own eyes. No foreign power on Earth could have destroyed us as quickly and completely as we have done ourselves.

We, the people, have sealed our own doom with our abysmal electoral choices, let alone the actions of those entrusted with the care of our great republic. The decay of democracy is devastating to endure.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
