Letter: Concealed carry bill is a giant, hypocritical step backward

(Alex Gallivan | Special to the Tribune) Rev. Curtis Price, First Baptist Church lights a candle at the nationwide vigil to end gun violence prior to this week's 5th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting at All Saints Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City, Sunday, December 10.

After attending the very moving vigil recently to remember Sandy Hook and other gun violence victims, I opened my newspaper to the editorial page this morning. There I learned that our attorney general, Sean Reyes, has joined his counterparts in 20 other states to support a congressional bill that would force recognition of our concealed carry permits on all the states that have the good sense not to allow the concealed carrying of firearms.

At a time when we should be looking for intelligent and creative ways to bridge our differences on the gun issue and stop the spate of massacres that have become the national norm, this is a giant step backward.

It is also hypocrisy from people who insist that states’ rights are the bedrock of our government. We have no business foisting our bad ideas on other states. As your editorial counseled, “this is an idea that needs to be shot down.”
