Letter: The baker exception — and other freedoms for open society

(Brennan Linsley | The Associated Press) In this March 10, 2014, file photo, Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips decorates a cake inside his store in Lakewood, Colo. Prominent chefs, bakers and restaurant owners want the Supreme Court to rule against a Colorado baker who wouldn’t make a cake for a same-sex couple’s wedding. The food makers say that once they open their doors for business, they don’t get to choose their customers.

I agree with the “overwhelming” 67 percent of Utahns who support religious bakers who refuse to make wedding cakes for gay couples (The Tribune, Nov. 2), as long as these bakers only make wedding cakes for members of their own religion.

Perhaps we should also use similar reasoning for stores that sell wedding gowns and suits, florists selling flowers, and other such businesses.

Such freedoms make for a very open society.
