The New York Times and several other news organizations are reporting that Charles Gibson has decided to step down as anchor of ABC's "World News" by year's end.
Diane Sawyer, the longtime "Good Morning America" host, will be his replacement. She will start in January.
Gibson reportedly made the decision after long conversations with ABC News president David Westin. "World News" has been finishing second in the ratings behind NBC's "Nightly News" with Brian Williams.
