Two teens thought to have drowned this weekend in the Green River in fact swam to an island in the river, where they were rescued.

The 19-year-olds, one from Vernal and the other from Jensen, were swimming in the river on Sunday when the current pulled them underwater and swept them downstream, Uintah County sheriff's deputies reported Tuesday.

Responders received a report of a drowning but instead found the teens on an island near the Split Mountain Campground. They were taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center.
