A 26-year-old man was stabbed and arrested early Monday morning after he allegedly attacked his pregnant girlfriend in their apartment.

Salt Lake City police said officers responded to the couple's apartment near 100 North and B Street around 1:30 a.m.

The man told officers he was stabbed while a robber was taking his wallet, said Salt Lake City Detective Dennis McGowan.

Officers noticed the man was intoxicated and went inside the apartment to speak with his girlfriend.

"They found out his whole story was just a lie," McGowan said.

The woman told officers her boyfriend was drunk and had thrown her down on the ground and tried to choke her, so she stabbed him in effort to get away.

Police took the man to a hospital, where his wound was treated. He later was booked into jail on suspicion of four misdemeanors, including assault on a pregnant person and public intoxication. The woman, who is 6½ months pregnant, was taken to the hospital for observation. Her baby should be OK, McGowan said.
