Rev. John Wester, 58, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, will undergo surgery Wednesday for prostate cancer.

Wester's condition was announced during weekend Masses at churches throughout the diocese, which encompasses all of Utah.

"His prognosis is good since they found [the cancer] early," Rev. Andrzej Skrzypiec said Sunday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Magna, praising the bishop for his work on behalf of immigrants and victims of injustice.
