A 19-year-old man was being treated for chest and head injuries Sunday after he drove the wrong way on a Salt Lake City freeway Saturday evening and slammed head-on into another car.

The 19-year-old man drove his blue Scion onto the Interstate 15/Interstate 80 exchange about 10:30 p.m., using a ramp at 600 South. But he was heading the wrong direction, said Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Steve Winward.

Driving westbound in eastbound I-80 lanes, the man slammed his Scion into an oncoming Chrysler Sebring, Winward said.

"[The Scion driver] didn't have his headlights on, and they arrested him for [driving under the influence] of alcohol," Winward said.

The 37-year-old driver of the Sebring suffered a broken leg and cuts on his arm. The 19-year-old was flown by helicopter to an area hospital in critical condition.

Both men were wearing seat belts.
