A man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a Sunday stabbing in Cedar City.

In court documents filed Monday, police wrote that the man, 19, admitted to breaking into a home near 1300 West and 1500 South by climbing through the kitchen window. The man said he got a knife from the cupboard and took off his clothes because "he thought that his clothing was making too much noise," police wrote. He then went to an upstairs bedroom, where a woman was sleeping, police wrote.

"He stated that he became very angry and began stabbing the victim," police wrote. The man said his hand slipped on the bloody knife, and he cut his fingers, police wrote. The victim fought the man, police wrote. Her husband, who was sleeping on a couch downstairs, heard her screaming and awoke to see the man running down the stairs, covered in blood and wearing only underpants and socks, police wrote. The husband tackled the man and held him down until police arrived.

The victim suffered multiple stab wounds on her neck, chest and upper body, police said, but the injuries were not life-threatening.

The man was charged with attempted aggravated murder and aggravated burglary, both first-degree felonies.
