Tire fire shoots flames into the night sky on Utah-Arizona border

Firefighters spent late Saturday and early Sunday battling a “suspicious” industrial yard fire in Colorado City, Ariz.

The blaze ignited about 9 p.m., according to fire officials. Photos and video posted to Facebook from residents across the community on the Utah-Arizona line show flames jumping into the air. Video taken about 12 hours later shows a pile of tires still smoldering in an industrial yard.

The fire’s origin was “suspicious,” according to a fire official for Colorado City and adjacent Hildale, Utah.

“There is no activity around there that would spark it,” said Fire Chief Kevin Barlow. “We’re trying to see if we can track down who started it.”

Instead of extinguishing the blaze, firefighters prevented its spread and monitored the flames Sunday morning.

“It’ll probably still smolder throughout the day,” Barlow said Sunday afternoon.
