A man who drowned Saturday after his kayak tipped over at Deer Creek Reservoir has been identified as 32-year-old Anuj Khandelwal, of Urbana, Ill.

Khandelwal and his wife were kayaking in Wallsburg Bay about 3:30 p.m. when the vessel flipped, according to Utah State Parks Sgt. Drew Patterson. He said bystanders dived into the water to try to help the man but could not locate him.

Khandelwal’s body was later located with sonar equipment about 75 feet below the water’s surface.

A GoFundMe account (https://www.gofundme.com/anuj-khandelwal-memorial-fund) has been set up to help with funeral expenses, including transporting Khandelwal’s body to India.

Khandelwal had recently completed a doctorate in medicinal chemistry at the University of Kansas and was working as a post doctoral researcher at the University of Illinois, according to the GoFundMe page.
