This 5-star quarterback could commit to BYU as soon as Tuesday

Ryder Lyons is expected to announce his college commitment in the next few days.

The five-star quarterback out of Folsom, Calif., visited the University of Oregon last weekend and Brigham Young University this weekend, Folsom coach Paul Doherty said to The Athletic.

“It sounds like he’s gonna make an announcement on Tuesday,” Doherty said. “I think he’s really high on both [Oregon and BYU]. They both have pros and cons, and nothing’s gonna be perfect, but all I try to counsel him on is that he’s picking from two incredible opportunities. You can’t really go wrong.”

Lyons will not play until the 2027 season; he is taking a mission trip for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first. But he plans on signing as a 2026 recruit.

At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Lyons is the No. 19 overall and highest-ranked uncommitted quarterback.

During his junior season at Folsom High, Lyons threw for 3,011 yards and 46 touchdowns with six interceptions. He also rushed for 14 touchdowns.

Lyons was previously linked to and pursued by the University of Southern California — his older brother Walker Lyons is a tight end there — but has since narrowed it down to Oregon and BYU.

Lyons would be the Cougars’ first signed five-star QB since Jake Heaps in 2009.

“I think he’s genuinely committed to his faith, and I think that weighs a lot at BYU. BYU is in the Big 12, and you’ve got a chance to play maybe sooner rather than later,” Doherty told The Athletic. “I think that weighs on him a lot. Both are great schools. If football doesn’t work out and you get a degree from either of those schools, I think you’ll be all right.”

Despite the appeal of BYU, Oregon has continued to make a strong push in recruiting Lyons. Doherty said the QB has a “really, really good” relationship with Ducks offensive coordinator Will Stein and that Lyons would be happy to go to school there.
