Weber State has fired head football coach Mickey Mental after three seasons in Ogden.

Mental, who took over for Jay Hill after he left for BYU, could not replicate the success of his predecessor.

Mental went 13-20 in his tenure, including losing seasons each of the last two years. The Wildcats are 3-7 this season. Weber State just lost to Montana State 66-14.

“We want to thank coach Mental for his efforts and the passion he put into our football program,” Weber State Director of Athletics Tim Crompton said in a news release. “We wish nothing but the best for him and his family in the future.”

Hill made Weber State into a national power in the FCS ranks. He won 68 games in nine seasons and won double-digit games four times.

Under his direction, WSU went to the FCS playoffs six times and made a run to the semifinal in 2019.

Weber State will begin a coaching search with two games left in the season. Interim head coach Brent Myers will lead the team against Idaho State and Northern Arizona.
