1 wounded in Utah road rage shooting on I-15

A day after two people “completely uninvolved” in an Eagle Mountain road rage conflict were killed in a subsequent crash, a person was shot and wounded in what is believed to be another Utah road rage encounter, according to Utah Highway Patrol.

On Monday at about 2:15 p.m., UHP received reports of a person on a motorcycle brandishing a gun while traveling north on Interstate 15 in Davis County, near the Layton Hills Mall, followed by reports that shots had been fired.

According to UHP, a person in a car traveling in an HOV lane was wounded by someone on the motorcycle, which had two people on it and was in the travel lane just to the right of the car. It’s unclear if the shooter was the motorcyclist or the bike’s passenger, but UHP said the shooting apparently stemmed from road rage.

The person wounded in the car was taken to a hospital for injuries that were considered survivable, UHP said. The motorcyclist and their passenger have not been located.

The shooting happened one day after two Utahns were killed near Eagle Mountain when their Porsche was hit head-on by a pickup truck. The truck’s driver had been involved in a road rage dispute with another vehicle before the crash, authorities said.

When the truck’s driver tried to ram the vehicle he was disputing with, he lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and plowed head-on into the separate car, killing Rodney Michal Salm, 48, of Salt Lake City; and his passenger, Michaela Himmleberger, 47, of Holladay, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

“Salm and Himmelberger were completely uninvolved in the road rage incident except at the point where the driver of the F-150 lost control and crashed head on into the Porsche,” a news release states.

The truck driver, who was not identified as of Tuesday morning, was taken to a hospital for survivable injuries. Charges against the truck driver are pending, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.
