Man arrested, suspected of fatally shooting girlfriend in Salt Lake City

The 20-year-old suspect was the boyfriend of the 24-year-old victim.

(Salt Lake City Police Department) A woman was shot to death at a Salt Lake City apartment complex on Sunday night.

Salt Lake City police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend on Sunday night.

The shooting was reported at the Downtown West Apartments at 718 N. 900 West at 8:25 p.m. When police officers arrived, they found the victim — who had been shot at least three times — inside one of the apartments.

The victim, 24-year-old Lyberdee Cisneros, was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

The 20-year-old suspect had a 9mm handgun in his pocket when he was taken into custody, according to a probable cause statement, and had “significant amounts of what appeared to be blood” on his hands and clothes.

The suspect told police he and Cisneros “argued and fought a lot.” Police wrote that the suspect “changed his story multiple times” and told them Cisneros shot herself. However, according to police, she “was shot multiple times in a manner not consistent with self-inflicted gun shot wounds.”

The suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where he is being held without bail. The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name suspects unless they have been charged with a crime.

Anyone with information about the shooting may call 801-799-3000. According to police, this marked the 12th homicide in Salt Lake City this year.
