A day to celebrate bookstores

Independent Bookstore Day, a celebration of booksellers in all 50 states, is set for Saturday — and more than a dozen Utah bookstores are doing their part. The King’s English says it’s bringing back “The Fellowship of Utah Indie Bookstores,” a challenge for readers to visit every independent bookstore in the state in a 12-month period. Weller Book Works will have some exclusive in-store sale items — including an autographed copy of the 19th “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book, “Hot Mess.” Under the Umbrella will sell tote bags that buyers can tie-dye on the store’s patio. Check with your favorite indie bookstore to find out what they’re planning for the day.

A day for going Dutch

Saturday is Dutch King’s Day, or Koningsdag, a worldwide celebration of all things related to The Netherlands, and Utah is taking part. The fourth annual Dutch King’s Day celebration, put on by The Old Dutch Store and the Dutch Club of Utah, is set for Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Millcreek Common, 1330 E. Chambers Ave., Millcreek. The event includes music from Dutch DJ Mark van Brabant, Dutch cuisine and local brews, a craft and vintage market (including a Kinder Flea Market for kids), and a bike parade (known as a Fietstocht) at 2 p.m. People are encouraged to wear orange, the color of the Dutch royal family. All events are free. Go to DutchSocialClubUtah.com for details.
