Park City Song Summit books a Grateful Dead founder, a modern folk star and hip-hop legends

Performances, songwriting labs and wellness events part of the second annual event, Sept. 7-9

(Brian Higbee | Verve Records) Folk/R&B/pop musician Joy Oladokun is among the musicians scheduled to take part in the second annual Park City Song Summit, Sept. 7-9, 2023, at The Canyons Village in Park City.

Musicians ranging from a founding member of The Grateful Dead to one of the country’s up-and-coming folk performers are on the lineup for the second annual Park City Song Summit — along with a trio of legends marking the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

Organizers this week announced the performers and panelists booked for the three-day event — a combination of performances, songwriting discussions and wellness activities — scheduled for Sept. 7-9 at the Canyons Village in Park City.

Representing the history of hip-hop are three pioneers of the genre: Darryl “DMC” McDaniels from RUN-DMC; DJ and producer Grandmaster Flash; and rapper Chuck D, leader of Public Enemy.

Among the other highlighted musicians:

• Guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir, a founding member of seminal jam band The Grateful Dead.

• Folk-R&B-pop performer Joy Oladokun, whose new album, “Proof of Life,” is slated to be released on April 28.

• R&B guitarist Celisse.

• Country songwriters Jeffrey Steele and Earl Bud Lee.

• Cuban musician Cimafunk, who blends Afro-Cuban beats with funk and hip-hop.

• New Orleans singer-songwriter Anders Osborne.

• Guitarist and musician Eric Krasno.

“Last year’s Park City Song Summit was the stuff dreams are made of,” summit founder/ringmaster Ben Anderson said in a news release. “Our artists, speakers, and attendees all walked away with lasting stories and songs to remember our inaugural event.”

Moving the event to the Canyons Village, Anderson said, “reflects the intention of our programming and provides ample physical room for our minds and hearts to roam in a variety of settings.” The village’s amphitheater stage will also bring the “summit experience to a bigger audience,” he said. Some of the intimate late-night venues on Park City’s Main Street still will be used.

Three-day summit passes and add-ons, single-day passes and individual show tickets will be available for presale on May 4 — and will be sold to the general public starting May 11.
