Weber State cracks the top 10 in FCS coaches poll; Southern Utah climbs to 18

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Weber State Wildcats tight end Andrew Vollert (87) pulls in a pass ahead of Southern Utah Thunderbirds safety Alex Sims (28) as Weber State hosts Southern Utah, NCAA football in Ogden Saturday October 14, 2017.

Weber State is now a top 10 football team.

After Saturday’s 63-17 win at Portland State, the Wildcats are ranked ninth in the nation in the latest FCS Coaches poll, released Monday. Southern Utah, which routed UC Davis 47-27 on the road, climbed to No. 18.

It is Weber State’s highest ranking since the 2009 season.

The win over the Vikings marked Weber State’s fourth straight victory. The Wildcats are now 8-2 overall and 6-1 in Big Sky play with one game remaining. Weber State is tied for first place in the Big Sky with Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.

SUU (8-2, 7-1), which holds the tiebreaker over the Wildcats via an October victory over Weber in Ogden, plays host to Northern Arizona Saturday in Cedar City. With a victory, the T-Birds can clinch an FCS playoff berth and the Big Sky’s regular season championship.

Weber State is the highest of four ranked teams in the Big Sky. Eastern Washington is 20th in the coaches poll and Northern Arizona comes in at No. 23.
