About the Utes: Coach Larry Krystkowiak credited assistant coach Andy Hill’s switch to a zone defense midway through the second half for Utah’s game-changing burst Friday in a 75-66 win over Grand Canyon. The Lopes had cut a 16-point deficit to one point. … Sedrick Barefield scored 26 points and Donnie Tillman added 14; each player has totaled 30 points in the tournament. … Two weeks ago, Utah lost 78-69 to Minnesota, another Big Ten team. … After Sunday’s game, the Utes will be halfway through their nonconference schedule. They will host Tulsa next Saturday.

About the Wildcats: They’ve lost to Fresno State (78-59) and beaten La Salle (91-74) in Fullerton. … Three players scored 20-plus points vs. La Salle, although guards Vic Law and Ryan Taylor shot a combined 9 of 26 from the field. The Wildcats made 35 of 43 free throws. … Northwestern’s 33-point win over Utah in 2006 came in a tournament in Puerto Rico.
