It appears Utah State football coach Matt Wells will hand over the controls to the offense to new offensive coordinator David Yost for the 2017 season.
Wells, who served as the Aggies offensive coordinator in 2012 and quarterbacks coach in 2011, added Yost to the staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Dec. 30.
"He'll have a lot of impact in terms of what we're doing on offense, and he's going to call the plays," Wells said.
Yost's past coaching stops included four years coaching quarterbacks at Toledo, 12 years working with quarterbacks at the University of Missouri and two seasons coaching wide receivers at Washington State before he joined the University of Oregon staff as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator prior to last season.
Yost's last four seasons at Missouri were also as the offensive coordinator (2009-12), while he also served as assistant head coach to Gary Pinkel in 2011 and 2012. Yost coached two quarterbacks who were NFL first-round draft picks at Missouri in Chase Daniel and Blaine Gabbert.
Last season, the Aggies ranked 11th out of 12 teams in the Mountain West in both scoring offense and total offense. Quarterback Kent Myers passed for 2,389 yards and rushed for 659 yards as a junior.
Luke Wells, Matt's brother, served as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator last season. Jovon Bouknight coached wide receivers and was the other co-offensive coordinator. Bouknight will continue to coach wide receivers this season, while Luke Wells is listed as the tight ends coach.
The Aggies begin spring practice on Tuesday morning in Logan.
