RSL forward Sam Johnson has been prohibited from engaging in any team activity following a shooting at a party at a house he owns in West Jordan.
The party took place overnight on Oct. 3 to the early morning hours of Oct. 4 near 5600 West and Mirror Lake Drive. There were about 100 people at the home, according to West Jordan Police Department Sgt. J.C. Holt, when a gunshot was fired causing partygoers to scatter. Holt said he believes Johnson was not at the party when the shot was fired.
Later, a man with a gunshot wound to the shoulder arrived at Intermountain Hospital in Murray. The injury was not life threatening. While the man said he was shot on State Street, police believe he was actually wounded at the party. The victim wasn’t cooperative with police about the incident, nor were other witnesses police tried to interview, according to Holt.
Gatherings of over 50 people are currently banned under Utah’s coronavirus health regulations.
“The team and league are aware of the incident and are currently conducting an investigation,” RSL said in a prepared statement. “In accordance with health and safety protocols, the player is prohibited from engaging in any team related activity. We will have no further comment until the conclusion of the League’s investigation.”

Johnson played in RSL’s match against LAFC on Oct. 4, subbing in at halftime. He started RSL’s match against Seattle on Oct. 7, but was left out of the team’s roster for their loss to Vancouver on Oct. 10.
Johnson has scored 10 goals for RSL since being signed to a Designated Player contract on Feb. 4, 2019.
