As a junior at Skyridge High, Creed Thompson won the individual 6A cross country championship. This past season, he had to settle for second place.
But the Falcons as a team won their first 6A title in Thompson’s high school career — an accolade he greatly helped them achieve. For the graduating senior, winning the state title was an experience unlike any other in his high school career.
“I don’t think anything else beats it,” Thompson said.
Thompson’s superb senior year in boys’ cross country culminated in winning the Gatorade award for Utah last month. He became the first athlete from Skyridge High to win for boys’ cross country.
“I think it’s just cool because it’s kind of starting a legacy at my school,” Thompson said. “Our team is just getting some momentum and we’re going to be really good for the next few years and hopefully forever.”
Aside from finishing second at the state meet, Thompson won the Region 4 championship, the TwiKnight Invitational, the Wasatch Invitational and the 6A Divisionals in 2020.
“Creed is one of the most dedicated athletes that I have ever worked with,” Skyridge cross country coach Jamie Alvizo said. “Everything he does in and out of practice is based on keeping himself strong physically and mentally. He also has such great vision of always wanting to improve and has become a true student of the sport.”
Thompson will run track and cross country at BYU along with his twin brother, Davin. Thompson is looking forward to the competition.
“When there’s so many guys that are way better than you in college, I think it can help me get better a lot faster because I’m not the best anymore,” Thompson said.
