Case dismissed for Utah high school baseball coach once charged with showing pornographic material to minors

The felony charges against Woods Cross High School’s former baseball coach have been dropped after prosecutors were presented with additional evidence in the case.

Trevor J. Amicone, 30, had been accused of showing pornographic images and videos to three minor males during the 2015-16 school year, according to charges filed last February in 2nd District Court.

On Monday, however, Davis County prosecutors dismissed the three third-degree felony counts of dealing in harmful materials to a minor by an adult.

“As the Trevor Amicone case progressed and significant ongoing follow-up investigation and processing of newly acquired forensic evidence was done by both defense counsel and our office, it became clear that there was not a reasonable probability of conviction at trial. The information from approximately 40 witnesses, along with documents and electronic evidence, led our staff to that determination,” Davis County attorney Troy Rawlings said in a statement Wednesday.

Rawlings and defense attorney Ron Yengich declined to discuss the specifics of the new information.

“I’m happy that it was dismissed,” Yengich said. “We did our investigation of what had allegedly occurred and provided that to the prosecutors, who followed up on their own and determined that a crime had not been committed.”

Amicone is the son of Salt Lake Bees president Marc Amicone and Weber State softball coach Mary Kay Amicone. He taught U.S. history at Woods Cross, where he had been the school’s baseball coach since the 2015 season.

“Obviously his reputation has already been impacted by the allegations, but he has a lot of support in the community,” Yengich said. “We had people contacting us routinely about him. Now he’s just going to to move forward with his life and attempt to reboot it.”
